The Cloud Data Engineer is key in developing, delivering, and managing the data infrastructure required to support the various business operations of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) and the various software and development initiatives. This position will be responsible to design, build, manage, integrate, and evolve complex, highly scalable databases that meet continually evolving business needs, security requirements, and software development projects. The Cloud Data Engineer will be experienced in designing, optimizing, maintaining, and troubleshooting databases, and managing data and information assets according to industry best-practices. Reporting to the Director, Information Technology, and as an important member of the Information Technology department, the Cloud Data Engineer will work in collaboration with the frontend development team and other stakeholders to ensure operational efficiencies related to use of data across the Museum enterprise. This position is critical to the success of our online projects.

• Design, manage, evolve user and business data needs across all software applications (new, legacy, evolving)
• Create and optimize distributed algorithms for scale out recommendation engine
• Implement methods for automation of all parts of the predictive pipeline to minimize labour in development and production
• Work in consultation with key stakeholders to design and develop highly accessible data-driven software applications
• Ensure new and legacy software development projects interact efficiently with data management systems according to industry standards and best practices
• Commission and install new applications and customize existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose
• Participate in the design of overall infrastructure, process and procedures of:
o establishing the needs of users and monitoring user access and security
o monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast query responses to front-end users;
o managing both back-end organization of data and front-end accessibility for end-users
• Maintain and improve existing data analysis systems (Elastic Stack)
• Develop and build critical dashboards and reports, including both ad-hoc and pre-defined reporting
• Formulate business problems as technical data problems while ensuring key business drivers are captured in collaboration with product management
• Troubleshoot data and infrastructure challenges when needed, aid in developing best-in-class data management practices
• Design, implement and validate hypothesis driven/exploratory analysis projects
• Ensure data quality and that data falls within data compliance
• Refine the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model
• Further refining the physical design to meet system storage requirements
• Develop, build, and maintain database management systems (DBMS)
• Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
• Control access permissions and privileges
• Develop, manage and test back-up and recovery plans
• Ensure that storage, archiving, back-up and recovery procedures are functioning correctly; capacity planning
• Communicate regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security
• Other duties and tasks as assigned

Skills and Qualifications – Required

• Degree or Diploma in Computer Science or similar technical field with a minimum of 5+ years Data Scientist and/or Database Administrator experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Advanced knowledge of and experience with traditional relational database technologies such as SQL, MYSQL, Oracle, ODBC and the ability to diagnose/troubleshoot related issues
• Advanced knowledge of and experience with non-traditional database technologies such as Hadoop, MongoDB, Cassandra and the ability to diagnose/troubleshoot related issues
• Knowledge in machine learning algorithms
• Experience working in and managing Dev/Test and Production environments
• Proven experience with reporting and visualization tools such as Dundas, Tableau, Clikview.
• Proven experience with a statistical analysis package such as PowerBI, R, SAS, AzureML.
• Proven experience working with large data sets and loves to work with data.
• Proven experience working with search technologies and performing search optimization
• Expertise in managing data requirements, data flow diagramming and logical data modeling skills
• Up-to-date knowledge of data modeling patterns and industry standard models; knowledge of best practices
• Proven ability to implement standards and processes that allows for quality assurance
• Superior planning, organization, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Extremely high attention to detail
• Ability to identify client needs and carry out requests
• Experience working in a fast-paced, high development environment
• Ability to work on multiple simultaneous assignments and have a high comfort level with prioritization changes

Skills and Qualifications – Desired

• Effective communication skills in both English and French (written and oral)
• Experience with a 24/7 always-up, always available service
• Experience working for or providing similar service to a museum, cultural institution, or similar entity
• Experience with Agile/Scrum project management
• Microsoft certification in Data Engineering, Machine Learning, or Data Management and Analytics
• Experience with RDFa or linked data, Solr and Lucene, and/or mobile development is an asset
