The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. Purpose of Position

Reporting to and under the guidance of the Director, Digital Outreach, the Digital Content Creation Specialist will create online content, sharing the stories of human rights through the website and social media platforms, which may include supporting articles, videos, podcasts and photographs.

The purpose of the position is to create engaging online content about human rights that can be promoted and amplified through social media. The CMHR is a storytelling museum, therefore this role uses communications to tell the CMHR’s story through online media. The Digital Content Creation Specialist role assists in the fulfilment of the CMHR’s mandate with the creation of high-quality communication materials, generally collaborating with internal or external stakeholders, to encourage reflection and dialogue.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contributes content for the Museum website and social media, including Facebook Live.

o   Through online content development, supports the Museum’s efforts to foster online dialogue among Canadians on human rights issues.

o   Through online content development, supports the Museum’s efforts to connect in-Museum content and discussions to people who may never visit the Museum.

o   Through online content development, supports the Museum’s efforts to become a demonstrated leader in the area of human rights.

  • Creates content (research and development of content including articles, videos, podcasts, interviews, web content, taking care to consult on approach and obtain necessary internal approvals); must be able to suggest supporting assets (images/video) to assist in the storytelling.
  • Conducts research to support online content development. Research may include interviews with internal and external stakeholders, media coverage, policy documents, information archives, computer databases, and website content.
  • As part of the Digital Outreach team, works collaboratively to meet strategic objectives and complete departmental key initiatives.
  • Tactfully and diplomatically engages with online influencers.
  • Attends events/interacts with public to increase online profile, takes photographs for social media publication, records good quotes for social media use.
  • Presents digital content proposals for review by the Director, Digital Outreach and for discussion with the Social Media Coordinator(s). Social media content will be approved by the Director, Digital Outreach.
  • Regularly liaises and communicates with teams from all areas of the Museum in order to support storytelling function.
  • Performs basic video editing, audio editing and posting on all social media platforms.
  • Manages projects from conception to completion, including the ability to adhere to the approved costs.
  • All other duties and tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A university degree in journalism, communications, political science, public policy, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
  • 3-5 years’ experience in at least one area of communications (e.g., social media, public relations, internal communications, writing and editing, media relations, video production); experience with issues management and bureaucratic process is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to present stories of human rights in language and style that is appropriate to the target audience
  • A strong understanding of how people share online content, including demonstrated personal or professional use of social media
  • Professional writing and editing skills; the ability to inform others, increase awareness, persuade or change behaviour
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize opportunity without being assigned a specific task and to take an interest in people and their stories
  • Demonstrated ability to work with different people and teams of people to find creative ways to tell human rights stories
  • Proven ability to respect diverse opinions and find creative ways to address relevant concerns
  • Proven ability to be sensitive to stakeholder needs and perceptions, and the ability to respond calmly and professionally to external stressors
  • Strong organizational skills, time management skills and ability to multi-task and anticipate needs
  • Knowledge of basic video editing, audio editing and ability to post content on all social media platforms
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Desired Qualifications

  • The ability to communicate with proficiency in both official languages, oral and written
  • Familiarity with tools such as Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere
  • Ability to interpret key points emerging from meetings or discussions that are complex or sensitive in nature
  • Ability to convey complex information in writing or through video
  • Interest in and familiarity with human rights and social justice issues and with the Museum

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Work is in an office environment. May require long periods at a desk, reading lengthy documents, and time in front of a computer
  • Will require irregular hours with short or no notice (evenings, weekends)
  • Will require attending Museum events in order to share online content and support engagement
  • Some travel may be required
