The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Retail, Branding and Licensing, with daily supervision by the Assistant Manager/Buyer, Retail, the Team Lead, Retail will be responsible for expanding the Museum visitor’s experience by overseeing and leading a team of Retail Associates, and providing exceptional service and assistance to visitors in the Museum Boutique. The Team Lead, Retail will also be responsible for monitoring inventory trends, customer preferences and preparing recommendations and reports for management.

  • Provide training, coaching, and guidance to Retail Associates.
  • Provide coaching and encouragement to Retail Associates to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to meet the assigned daily and weekly sales goals.
  • Conduct opening and closing procedures on cash registers, dispense and deposit tills, and operate active till as needed.
  • Ensure the daily dispensing and depositing of cash floats.
  • Address escalated staff and visitor issues and concerns, in consultation with the Manager or Assistant Manager, as deemed appropriate.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory accuracy by overseeing the processing of incoming goods, and ensure that goods are received in good order.
  • Prepare various retail reports and provide administrative support to retail management.
  • Act as backup to Manager, Retail, Branding and Licensing or Assistant Manager/Buyer, Retail, as required.
  • Assess Boutique needs at peak times, greet customers and offer general retails assistance.
  • Participate in the annual inventory count, as well as the quarterly spot counts.
  • Maintain and communicate knowledge of retail policies and procedures, CMHR policies, and related security practices.
  • Maintain knowledge of fair-trade and ethically sourced retail products, current sales and promotions, and share knowledge with CMHR members, visitors and staff.
  • Receive, price and prepare incoming product for the sales floor.
  • Maintain Boutique stock levels, display and arrange merchandise per Boutique’s vision.
  • Delegate tasks such as cleaning and tidy shelves, counters and displays throughout the Boutique.
  • In consultation with the Manager, Retail, Branding and Licensing, suggest and submit sharable, relevant content to the Marketing department to be published on the Boutique’s social media in order to increase product exposure and drive awareness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications – Required

  • Minimum of 3 years’ retail experience in a supervisory or team lead role, or an equivalent combination of experiences
  • Experience working as part of a team and providing leadership
  • Demonstrated experience in handling and sensitively addressing staff and visitor concerns and complaints
  • Expert and proficient in the operations of a POS (point of sale) system including credit and debit card processing, cash handling, reconciling daily cash-out and prepare daily deposits
  • Knowledge and experience in the operations of the inventory management system, including data entry and maintaining accurate inventory records for the Boutique and webstore
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient in MS Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Available to work shifts (weekdays, weekends, evenings and general holidays)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both official languages, oral and written

Skills and Qualifications – Desired

  • Experience providing leadership to a retail team
  • Knowledge of general security practices in a retail setting
  • Ability to communicate in additional languages
  • An excellent understanding of web technologies and social media, such as Twitter, Instagram, etc. for product marketing purposes
  • Experience working with and managing volunteers
  • Experience with visual merchandising displays
  • Ability to determine retail and fashion trends
  • Knowledge of fair trade principles

Official Language Proficiency:

  • BBC – Written Comprehension (intermediate), Written Expression (intermediate) and Oral Proficiency (Advanced) in French

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Flexible work hours, including weekdays, weekends, evenings and general holidays
  • Some travel may be required
  • Occasional heavy lifting required (up to 20 kilograms/44 pounds)
  • Considerable standing is required (up to 3 hours) or the ability to remain stationed in one location
