2018 Coach of the Year – Willem Konrad

by ahnationtalk on February 5, 2019317 Views

It has been an incredible year for Willem Konrad of Winnipeg, Manitoba. To sum it up, Konrad went 45 Wins and zero losses, winning three national championships, one provincial championship, one high school tournament and two club tournament championships in the spring and summer of 2018.

Konrad started off his year by coaching Kelvin High School where he brought the Clippers to their first national championship win at the 2018 Canadian High School Ultimate Championships (CHSUC). In addition to their victory, the Clippers also took home the Spirit title from the event. Kelvin went on to finish with a perfect season, winning their third provincial championship in four years in Manitoba.

Not only did Konrad coach Kelvin to championships, he also sponsored a team from Oxford House, Manitoba, to come down and play at the 2018 Provincial High School Championships. He organized their travel, jerseys, accommodations and then coached them at Provincials while also coaching Kelvin High School to a Provincial Championship. The Oxford House team went 1-4 in their first tournament and was voted most spirited.

Moving into the summer months, Konrad was a player-coach and captain for Winnipeg’s mixed team Pretty Boys & Handsome Girls (PBHG) as well as the assistant coach for the Master’s of Flying Objects (MOFO) junior women’s team. At the 2018 Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC), Konrad helped coach MOFO to their first ever gold medal in the junior women’s division. A week later, he followed that up by leading his team, PBHG, to their first ever national championship gold medal at the CUC mixed championship.

In addition to his success this year, Konrad also coaches in the the Winnipeg youth ultimate league, has coached several teams to national championships over the last few years and continues to dedicate his time and resources to the growth of ultimate in Manitoba.

Konrad coaches with a rare combination of knowledge, patience, understanding and skill that is demonstrated by his successes both on the field as a player and as a coach. In 2018 alone, he committed himself to three separate ultimate teams, with each team having their own practice schedule and playing schedule. His near perfect attendance to all of his teams events is a beautiful display of his love for ultimate and his dedication to helping players elevate their game to the next level.
