AMC Calls on Pallister and Trudeau to Include A First Nations Seat at Friday’s Summit on Winnipeg’s ‘Crisis’

Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – Grand Chief Arlen Dumas and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) call on Premier Brian Pallister to invite leadership of the AMC to the table at Friday’s leadership summit in dealing with public safety in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman requested a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Brian Pallister to discuss public safety. Bowman said that Winnipeg is in a state of ‘crisis’ following a string of violent crimes over the past week. A summit will be held with the Premier and Prime Minister on Friday, Nov 8th. Mayor Bowman’s attendance has not yet been confirmed. As of today, no leaders representing First Nations have been invited to the table.

“The events that we have experienced in Manitoba over the past few days have been very concerning,” said AMC Grand Chief Arlen Dumas. “We need viable solutions and tangible actions to respond to the crisis we are in. However, we can’t neglect the systemic issues and root causes of the crimes we are seeing. Unfortunately, a large reason we are seeing issues like this surfacing is because First Nations have not been included in discussions like this. We call on Pallister and Trudeau to include a First Nations perspective at this week’s summit.”
