WINNIPEG – The leader of the Manitoba New Democrats says his party will investigate allegations from several women who say they were sexually harassed by a former cabinet minister.

Wab Kinew, who took over the party leadership after it was defeated by the Progressive Conservatives in the last election, says he’s disappointed to hear about the allegations against Stan Struthers.

Several women have come forward with allegations regarding Struthers’ alleged behaviour over more than a decade while the New Democrats were in power.

It includes allegations that he tickled and groped them.

In each case, the women said they were told to suck it up when they reported the behaviour.

Kinew says the lack of action about the women’s concerns was a “failure of leadership” by both former premier Greg Selinger, who’s still a member of the legislature, and others in government leadership roles.

He says Struthers should have been removed from his cabinet position and the party.

Following an investigation by a party commission, Kinew says they will release any recommendations.

Struthers, who was in cabinet for more than a decade, has apologized for any interactions that made people feel disrespected or uncomfortable.
