Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, MB. _ Grand Chief Arlen Dumas of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs congratulates Kevin T. Hart of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in his re-election to the position of Manitoba Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations.

“I look forward to a continued relationship with the re-elected Regional Chief Hart,” said Grand Chief Dumas.

“It’s important to me that we, as leaders, follow the path set out for us by the Chiefs who have come before us. This approach goes back to Wahbung: Our Tomorrows and work done by previous Chiefs’ to pursue First Nations’ jurisdiction and work in unity.”

Wahbung: Our Tomorrows is a position paper written in 1971 as an answer to the Pierre Elliot Trudeau government’s 1969 White Paper that proposed ending the legal relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the Canadian government while dismantling the Indian Act.

The Regional Chief represents Manitoba as part of the Assembly of First Nations’ executive committee.

Regional Chief Kevin T. Hart won on the second ballot with 33 of a possible 55 votes.

“That passion and desire inside of me, I will use that to fight for housing, water and infrastructure in this region. And for our missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and their families,” said Regional Chief Hart in his acceptance speech.

The other candidates who also ran were: Nelson Genaille of Sapotaweyak Cree Nation and David Harper of Garden Hill First Nation.
