Second Harvest has distributed close to $5 million in emergency funding to Indigenous communities and organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The FoodRescue.ca Emergency Fund is granting another $1.5 million by opening a new funding cycle that focuses on providing further support to Indigenous peoples during COVID-19.

The FoodRescue.ca Emergency Fund is an emergency response initiative that can provide both financial and food support through Second Harvest’s FoodRescue.ca. This funding and food support are available to the following if they are supporting people through food programs and initiatives:

  • Indigenous-led organizations;
  • Indigenous community groups; and
  • First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities.

Qualified areas of support:

  • Grant requests must be related to food programming or directly supporting access to safe and nutritious food during COVID-19.
  • Emergency response towards purchasing food, supplies, staff, equipment, and immediate infrastructure upgrades towards providing COVID-19 relief.

Application guidelines:

  • Larger communities and organizations that will distribute the funding to local service delivery organizations must list those organizations and how funding would be allocated.
  • Applications can be completed online, via email using this form or verbally to honour oral traditions.

  • Deadline to submit your application is July 31, 2020.
    Applications will be reviewed and granted on a first come, first serve basis until the funds have been exhausted.
  • Applicants will be eligible for financial grants from $5000 up to $20,000.

Who can apply:

  • National, regional, and local Indigenous service delivery organizations supporting Indigenous peoples
  • National, regional, and off-reserve Indigenous organizations supporting their members living away from their communities (for example, Indigenous representative organizations and Tribal Councils)
  • Organizations/groups must not have received previous emergency funding from Food Banks Canada, Community Food Centres Canada, Breakfast Clubs of Canada, or Salvation Army in the last five months.

Reporting requirements:

  • Should your application be successful, Second Harvest will require a report on the use of the funds provided and the impact within the community.
  • We will not require receipts or tracking of expenses.
  • Successful applicants will be provided with a funding agreement and funding report upon the disbursement of funds.
