Birdtail Sioux is allocated enough to build 1 new home a year, chief says

Nearly 5,500 homes on Manitoba First Nations either need major renovations or need to be replaced, say figures provided by Indigenous Services Canada.

“That’s one of … our biggest problems,” Birdtail Sioux First Nation Chief Ken Chalmers said. “Our deficits usually belong to housing. We need more homes here.”

Out of the 17,289 homes on Manitoba First Nations, 4,176 need major renovations and 1,213 need replacement, Indigenous Services Canada says.

The other 11,900 homes have been deemed adequate, which the department said simply means they have basic plumbing facilities, such as hot and cold running water, inside toilets and installed baths or showers.
