WINNIPEG. x–13s. During the First and Second World Wars thousands of Indigenous people enlisted in the Canadian military, but did not get
the same benefits as their non-Indigenous comrades when they returned home. Today, people across the country will gather for the 25th
National Aboriginal Veterans Day to recognize and honour their sacrifices. Randi Gage, organizer of the first event in 1993, says
Indigenous veterans want to spend Remembrance Day at larger events, so having a separate Aboriginal Veterans Day gives them a chance to
share their stories at home.
