UCN: Acknowledging Elder David Lathlin
April 8, 2018
University College of the North (UCN) would like to acknowledge the passing of Elder David Lathlin of Opaskwayak Cree Nation.
Elder Lathlin was integral to the development of UCN’s Kenanow Bachelor of Education Program. Elder Lathlin was most concerned by the lack of student success and high drop-out rate amongst Aboriginal students within our education system. He believed that in order to achieve a better and higher student success rate we needed to change the way teachers were trained.
In 2008, Elder Lathlin approached former UCN President, Dr. Denise Henning with his thoughts. He then gathered three other Elders (Elder Pat Lathlin, Elder Stella Neff, and Elder Mabel Bignell) and with assistance from Doris Young and Esther Sanderson, Kenanow became a reality.
Elder Lathlin’s commitment to land-based education, partnerships with local Elders and traditional knowledge-keepers was integral in the foundation of the Kenanow B.Ed. program and remains a priority in the program’s delivery. He shared his vision and vast experiences in many important lessons. Elder Lathlin remained an important resource to the faculty and students of Kenanow throughout the years.
UCN expresses sincere condolences to David’s wife, Elder Pat Lathlin and their extensive family and friends. We were deeply sorrowed to hear of Elder Lathlin’s passing and take comfort in knowing that his legacy continues on and while missed tremendously, he will always be remembered.
