UCN Releases New Strategic Plan

In recognition of the importance of University College of the North (UCN) in supporting social and economic development in northern Manitoba, and as part of celebrating the 15th anniversary of UCN’s establishment as a university college, UCN’s Governing Council has released a new Strategic Plan that helps to ensure that UCN plays a leading role in strengthening Manitoba’s north.

“University College of the North is taking a much stronger approach to serving the needs of the north,” said Cam Mateika, Chair of UCN’s Governing Council. “UCN is a critically important institution in helping to ensure that northern Manitoba remains strong, and our new Strategic Plan creates a foundation to help the north get even stronger.”

The new Strategic Plan includes a new vision statement: “Guided by the Seven Sacred Teachings, UCN is building better futures for a stronger North.” The new mission states that “UCN serves northern communities and people with education, training, teaching, learning, and research, while being inclusive and respectful of diverse Indigenous and northern values.”

“UCN is focusing on ensuring that Indigenous and northern Manitobans have access to educational opportunities that will lead to employment right here in the north,” said Doug Lauvstad, UCN’s President and Vice-Chancellor. “UCN is working hard to ensure that serving the economic and social development needs of northern and Indigenous communities is at the centre of all that we do.”

The Strategic Plan establishes four specific strategic directions that further defines UCN’s vision and mission statements. These four directions include: (1) support student success; (2) advance an agenda of reconciliation; (3) engage with communities and with industries; and (4) ensure responsible administration. These strategic directions are realized through UCN’s activities, details of which will be released over the course of 2019.
