Weweni Indigenous Scholar Dr. Lorna Williams

The Weweni Indigenous Scholars Speaker Series presents Dr. Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams. She will be speaking on How Universities can Support Indigenous Language Revitalization and Maintenance on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 12:30PM –1:30PM in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Williams is Lil’wat from the St’at’yem’c First Nation. She has devoted her career to enhancing education for Aboriginal learners, and promoting Indigenous language revitalization. Throughout her career she has held a number of senior positions, notably as the Director of Aboriginal Education at the University of Victoria and the Director of the Aboriginal Enhancements Branch in the British Columbia Ministry of Education, and is recognized internationally for her expertise in curriculum design and indigenous ways of knowing.

Presently, Williams is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and Department of Linguistics at the University of Victoria. Within the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria, Dr. Williams has created a series of courses known as “Learning and Teaching in an Indigenous World.” This program was designed to create a unique pedagogical space where Indigenous wisdom is experienced by students and faculty members alike. Dr. Williams held the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Knowledge and Learning until her retirement in 2014 and is currently president of both the Salishan Institute and Fel Canada. In 1993 she received the Order of British Columbia for her passionate work to help people of all cultural heritages understand each other.

The Weweni Indigenous Scholars Speaker Series will present distinguished Indigenous scholars and celebrate the success of UWinnipeg students throughout the academic year 2016–2017. Hosted by Associate Vice-President, Kevin Lamoureux, and the Office of Indigenous Affairs.
