The job
APTN News and the Indigenous Journalists Association [IJA] are partnering with Journalists for Human Rights on a new project to offer a total of six fellowship positions for First Nations, Inuit, or Métis candidates wanting to explore a career in journalism.
Any individual claiming to be an Indigenous person is expected to be able to produce a Certificate of Indian Status, tribal enrollment proof, federal certificate of Indian blood, Métis Citizenship card, Indigenous ancestral or genealogical information, or modern kinship verification from community leaders or members, upon request.
This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is passionate about telling stories from their community and has an interest in writing for online or television.
While we’re looking for people who have some experience and interest in communications, research, and/or media, you don’t have to have a degree or formal background in journalism to apply! If you care about stories and want to explore telling them through journalism, this opportunity is for you.
The successful candidates will be given the opportunity to:
- Learn from a dedicated mentor in an Indigenous-led newsroom
- Research, pitch and cover original Indigenous news stories
- Cover assigned news stories and work with a producer
- Produce digital journalistic content (written content, photos and video)
- Edit material for use on digital platforms (website, social media, television)
- Learn the technical aspects of producing the news, like camerawork and video editing
- Fellows will also have the opportunity to travel to the United States to attend the 2025 Indigenous Media Conference!
The fellows will report directly to their managers at APTN, the first national Indigenous broadcaster in the world, and benefit from an Indigenous-led newsroom environment.
