Network Operations Technician

Position Summary

The Network Operations Technician will be responsible for providing technical support for network and systems operational issues and resolving escalated service desk incidents. They will also assist with design, implementation, administration, and optimization of the company’s network devices, servers, and systems to achieve high performance and efficiencies.  The Network Operations Technician will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues to maximize the benefit of these systems.

Responsibilities

Network Operations:

  • Provide configuration and/or technical support for network devices
  • Complete firmware upgrades for all network devices
  • Proactively monitor the network, using monitoring systems to identify and correct network issues
    • Including network quality monitoring (packet loss, jitter, or issues that could lead to network device failures)
  • Provide support for client services tickets:
  • Escalated tickets via progression (exceeded resolvable time limits by service desk)
  • Escalated tickets via scope (limited knowledge at service desk)
  • Maintain and support IP Address Management (IPAM)
  • Prepare/coordinate work orders and equipment requests to resolve network issues
  • Travel to perform network maintenance, repair, and new installation as required
  • Create and maintain network documentation such as FAQ articles, procedure, device configuration, etc.

Systems Administration:

  • Assist in design, installation, administration, and troubleshooting of core system technologies
  • Ensure the security of the company’s server, virtual and network infrastructure, including support for corporate firewalls
  • Management of all BCN infrastructure including internal VMware environment, hosted servers and Windows AD technologies.
  • Build and install servers, configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings and storage in accordance with standards and project requirements.
  • Management of MSSQL/MySQL in dev, QA and production environments.
  • Develop and perform daily backup operations ensuring all required filesystems and data are successfully backed up and routinely restored.
  • Manage and monitor antivirus and endpoint protection of all systems.
  • Manage and monitor application products as used by BCN
  • Manage incoming IT support requests, and break/fixes using service desk software.

Education & Experiences

  • Extensive Microsoft environment knowledge including servers, licensing, & Office 365 and demonstrative administration of these products through Microsoft certifications and experience.
  • Solid knowledge of Linux environments.
  • Solid experience administering a VMware environment.
  • Knowledge of network technologies, switches, routers, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, VPN and encryption, and routing protocols (e.g Checkpoint, Mikrotik, etc).
  • Knowledge of web serving software (e.g. Apache).
  • Solid experience with scripting languages: Perl, Python, etc.
  • Strong ability to create Visio Diagrams for the network and infrastructure that we support.
  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, ARP, VLAN, RADIUS, STP, and MPLS WAN technology.
  • Knowledge of ITIL framework
  • Ability to operate tools, components, and peripheral accessories
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, procedural documentation, and OEM guides
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to convey technical information to non-technical people

Work Conditions

  • Some travel will be required from time to time
  • Shift work, extended hours, evening, and weekend work to meet deadlines especially in the field
  • Sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other computer components.
