Position Description:

The goal of the SSD Program Leader is to increase employability, education, health and lower at-risk behaviour in communities, through the vehicle of sport and recreation. The program lead will co-create and execute the programs with the above goals, in community while teaching and mentoring community members to run their own programs. The position is based out of the Sport for Life Centre in Winnipeg, but monthly travel throughout the province is required.

The Program Leader will be trained in all needed courses to teach and mentor in multiple sports, leadership activities and traditional games. They will travel to five or more strategically chosen Manitoba communities at least three times a year. Building relationship with the selected community mentees will be a very large part of the job. All programs will be geared toward leadership development in the measurements of the above stated goals. The Program Leader will also collect all necessary information for the final reports.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With Program Director, create and implement measurable programs
  • Travel within Manitoba minimum twice a month
  • Build relationship with community and program mentee’s
  • Be able to adapt programming when needed
  • Written reports quarterly
  • Taking photos, videos and surveys as directed for communications


  • Post-secondary degree in recreation management, social work or education; or equivalent work experience
  • Several years of proven experience in planning, delivering and coordinating recreational/sport programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong skills in MS Office (Word, Outlook and Excel)
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment with limited supervision
  • Proven ability to follow direction, complete tasks and meet deadlines
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations on and off reserve
  • Experience in conducting workshops and presentations is an asset


  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Driver’s Abstract will be required after hire)
  • Criminal Record Check and Manitoba Child Abuse Registry Check are required
  • Preference will be given to those of Indigenous descent (First Nations, Métis and Inuit)
