AMC Honours MMIWG2S+ and Recognizes Provincial Support for Families

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg – As First Nations and allies gather for the Annual Women’s Memorial March, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) stands in remembrance of missing and murdered First Nations women, girls, and Two-Spirited persons. This day serves as both a solemn tribute and a renewed commitment to fostering safety, justice, and healing for future generations.

Today, Grand Chief Kyra Wilson is attending the MMIWG2S+ Walk in Thompson, MB, standing alongside families, survivors, and community members in solidarity and support.

“Today, we honour the lives of our lost sisters, aunties, grandmothers, daughters, and Two-Spirited relatives,” said Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “This march reminds us of the ongoing work needed to ensure safety, justice, and recognition for our women, girls, and Two-Spirited relatives.”

The AMC acknowledges today’s announcement from the Province of Manitoba regarding the $10-million donation from the Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health to the MMIWG2S+ Healing and Empowerment Endowment Fund.

“We welcome this investment as a step forward in supporting families and survivors,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “It is essential that First Nations voices and lived experiences guide how these resources are allocated to create meaningful and lasting impact.”

The AMC remains committed to working collaboratively with all partners to advance the implementation of the MMIWG Calls for Justice and address the root causes of violence. Transparency and accountability in fund allocation are key to ensuring the long-term safety and well-being of First Nations women, girls, and Two-Spirited persons.

“Our advocacy will continue until we see real, meaningful progress,” Grand Chief Wilson added. “Together, we must build a future where our people are safe, valued, and empowered.”
