Assembly of First Nations Congratulates Newly Elected Manitoba
Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson

(Ottawa, ON): Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde congratulates Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson elected last Wednesday at the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, MB.

“I congratulate Sheila North Wilson on her election as Grand Chief and on being the first woman elected to this position,” said National Chief Perry Bellegarde.  “Grand Chief North Wilson is a strong leader and an excellent spokesperson who is dedicated to her family and her people.  She brings tremendous knowledge and profile to her work and is a proven communicator, having worked in media and with First Nations organizations and people.  I look forward to working with Grand Chief North Wilson and supporting her, nationally.”

MKO Grand Chief North Wilson, who is from the Bunibonibee Cree Nation, was elected in the second ballot last Wednesday by MKO Chiefs. She replaces former Grand Chief David Harper.

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) is a non-profit, political advocacy organization that provides a collective voice on issues of inherent, Treaty, Aboriginal and human rights for the citizens of the 30 sovereign First Nations they represent.  The MKO First Nations are signatory to Treaties 4, 5, 6 and 10.
