Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs to Send Inter-Related Operational Planning Report for the Search of the Prairie Green Landfill to Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada

Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) and Leadership of Long Plain First Nation (LPFN) are pleased to announce that they have completed the Inter-Related Operational Planning Report for a Search of the Prairie Green Landfill. The report is under review by the affected families and AMC Legal counsel. When this review process is complete, the report will be forwarded to the funder, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC). The AMC will also send copies to the Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg for their review.

“This report marks a crucial step towards searching the landfill and addresses concerns about the Prairie Green Landfill Search,” said Grand Chief Cathy Merrick. “The report affirms the commitment of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and its member First Nations to justice, accountability, and transparency. The review process ensures a thorough assessment of the landfill operation, prioritizing the safe retrieval of any remains found while honouring the voices and concerns of affected families and Nations.”

Following the completion of the review and the submission to CIRNAC and other levels of government, the AMC will host a press conference to share the planning and recommendations of the Inter-Related Operational Planning Report with the public. We believe this transparency reaffirms our commitment to keeping our Nations and the public informed about the progress, outcomes, and next steps of this important project, as well as create a precedent for future searches so it does not have to be as difficult for victims, affected families and leaders to get searches underway.
