PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – The parents of a missing Manitoba teenager are at loggerheads with a First Nations Chief as they try to find some trace of their daughter.
Bernice Catcheway, whose daughter, Jennifer disappeared seven years ago, says the family has been barred from entering the Dakota Tipi reserve near Portage la Prairie.
The family brought a backhoe to search the community’s dump and several other areas.
Chief David Pashe says his community welcomed the searchers when the first came to the reserve several years ago.
But he says they’ve been digging holes, knocking down trees and searching in places outside of the areas they said they’d be in, including near a cemetery.
Pashe says if they want to come back they should bring the R-C-M-P and a search warrant.
The Mounties have said there are insufficient grounds to justify a warrant.
Catcheway says it’s important the family be allowed to go back to the reserve to follow up some leads.
