Treaty Five Territory, Thompson, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) and Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin Inc. (KIM) commend all Indigenous nurses who have dedicated their lives to advancing the health and safety of Indigenous citizens across Manitoba and Canada.

May 11, 2022, marks Indigenous Nurses Day, as proclaimed by the Honourable Audrey Gordon, Minister of Health for Manitoba. National Nursing Week runs from May 9 to 15, 2022.

“On behalf of MKO, I commend and recognize Indigenous nurses who continue to work diligently to ensure that First Nations receive the highest level of care,” said Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “Ekosi for your ongoing commitment to serving others. During National Nursing Week, MKO also recognizes the non-Indigenous nurses who provide excellent care and act as allies and advocates for First Nations people accessing the health care system in Manitoba.”

“Today we celebrate Indigenous nurses for their contributions towards minoayawin. They are often the first healthcare professionals people see on possibly their worst days. Nurses play a pivotal role within our healthcare system, and we couldn’t live without them,” shared Dr. Barry Lavallee, Chief Executive Officer of KIM. “Let’s take time to honour Indigenous nurses throughout our province and especially within the northern, remote and isolated communities we serve.”

“I thank each and every Indigenous nurse who have worked tirelessly this past year to ensure First Nations citizens continue to be prioritized in this COVID-19 era. They have stepped up and their commitment and dedication is truly remarkable,” said Caroline Chartrand, President of the Manitoba Indigenous Nurses Inc. and the Senior Nurse Advisor at KIM.
