Colourful Works by Annie Taipana to Show at WAG’s Gallery Shop
Winnipeg, Manitoba, November 18, 2015: The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Gallery Shop is proud to present a new exhibit of over 15 works by Annie Taipana, one of Baker Lake’s most celebrated artists. Taipana will be in attendance for the opening reception on Friday, November 20 from 6-9pm. Running until December 31, the show is free and all works are available for purchase.
Taipana is well known for her wall hangings, featuring bright colours and stitch work layered on top of felt and wool duffel or melton. Her images tell the stories of a life lived on the land.
“This past summer I had the great privilege of traveling to Baker Lake and Rankin Inlet where I got to meet Annie Taipana and plan this show with the Jessie Oonark Centre,” explains Sherri Van Went, WAG Manager of Retail Operations. “Taipana’s work is full of activity and will give Gallery Shop visitors a glimpse of the beauty of the North.”
Born in 1931 in Gary Lake, Taipana relocated to Baker Lake in 1972. The artist comes from a creative family. Her mother, the late Elizabeth Angrnaqquaq, was a talented textile artist, and her late husband Jimmy Taipana was a celebrated carver who taught her how to do appliqué and embroidery.
“It’s an honor to know Annie Taipana whom I’ve worked with over the past three decades,” says David Ford, General Manager, Jessie Oonark Ltd. “It’s great to see her having her own show in Winnipeg and a wonderful opportunity to experience so many of her vibrant wall hangings together.”
Taipana’s work is brimming with life: patterns of animals repeating, flying, swimming, sleeping, eating, and being eaten. Her deep connection to animals started as a child, when she befriended baby wolves adopted by her parents. Now living in Rankin Inlet, Taipana is surrounded by family and continues to produce work.
The Gallery Shop is open extended hours for the holiday season until December 22: Monday-Wednesday, Saturday-Sunday, 11am-5pm, and Thursday-Friday, 11am-9pm.
This exhibit is organized in collaboration with Jessie Oonark Centre, Nunavut Development Corporation, and Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association.
