It was the news nobody wanted to hear.

But during a candlelight vigil meant to encourage hope for a happy ending, a crowd in Blairmore, Alberta learned that a two-year-old subject of an Amber Alert had been found dead.

The R-C-M-P said the remains of Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette had been found in a rural location near Blairmore.

She’d been abducted from her home early Monday by someone driving a speeding white van.

Her 27-year-old father Terry Blanchette was found dead in the home that same day, in what police believe was a homicide.

They say charges are pending against a 22-year-old Blairmore man who was taken into custody yesterday. (5)

B-C’s Independent Investigation Office is probing the accident that claimed the life of a little boy in Penticton.

A four-year-old boy crossing the road with his family early last evening was struck by a car driven by an off-duty police officer who was driving his own personal vehicle.

The child died of his injuries later in hospital. (5)

(Former-Aide-Charged)

An Ottawa judge says she’ll announce on October 2nd when she will release her ruling concerning Bruce Carson, a former top aide to Prime Minister Harper.

A two-day hearing wrapped up yesterday for Carson, who is charged with influence peddling.

His lawyer says Carson worked in 2010 and ’11 to help an Ottawa company sell water-treatment systems for First Nations communities, which he notes is not a Criminal Code office.

He also said Carson lobbied First Nations communities — not the federal government — to buy water purification equipment from a firm where his girlfriend at the time was employed. (5)

(US-Fatal-Flash-Floods)

An expert with the U-S National Weather Service says the flash floods that killed at least 16 people in two Utah locations is a “100 year event.”

Twelve people died when water washed away a van and SUV carrying three women and 13 children.

One person is still missing.

About 30 kilometres to the north at Zion National Park, the same storm killed four hikers and left three missing. (5)

(Europe-Migrants)

Austria’s railway has stopped all train traffic from Salzburg into Germany. Austria says Germany made the request.

Thousands of migrants and refugees have taken trains from Salzburg to Munich for more than a week.

Most of the people streaming into Austria from Hungary have continued on to Germany.

Hundreds of migrants who were in Salzburg are now trying to make it to Germany on foot. (5)

(Seattle-Teachers)

Students in Seattle, Washington will be hitting the books again tomorrow after teachers and the school district reached a tentative contract agreement.

Teachers will return to work today after a weeklong strike that secured them a 9.5 per cent pay raise over three years.

The new deal includes a mandatory 30-minute recesses for elementary students, a longer school day, and more say over standardized tests. (5)
