New program will help build local workforce and address millwright shortage

Arctic Gateway Group (AGG) is supporting a new Millwright training program at the Port of Churchill, in collaboration with the Northern Manitoba Sector Council (NMSC) and the Communities Economic Development Fund (CEDF).

This initiative aims to address the need for skilled millwrights in the north and create job opportunities for Indigenous students.

“As we grow our operations at the Port of Churchill, we are making sure that our success directly results in the success of northern communities,” said Chris Avery, CEO, Arctic Gateway Group. “This is the benefit of AGG’s local ownership. With 41 Indigenous and bayline communities invested in Arctic Gateway, we’re going to make sure these communities see the benefit of a strong Port of Churchill, Hudson Bay Railway, and arctic trade corridor.”

“We are pleased to support this new training program at the Port of Churchill, which will lead to more millwrights working in northern Manitoba,” said Chris Thevenot, CEO, Communities Economic Development Fund. “Millwrights are in high demand in the north, and this training program is a great opportunity for Indigenous students to build valuable skills, get good jobs, and help grow the local economy.”

“The Northern Manitoba Sector Council is committed to supporting the Millwright training program at the Port of Churchill,” said Glenn Laycock, Executive Director, Northern Manitoba Sector Council. “This program is focused on building up the skills of northern residents. By providing industry-leading training and creating direct pathways to employment, we are ensuring that the benefits of this program extend into the broader community.”

Program Overview
