Manitoba Government Begins Search at Brady Landfill

The Manitoba government has begun the next critical step in the search for the remains of Ashlee Shingoose, Premier Wab Kinew, minister responsible for Indigenous Reconciliation, announced today.

“One year ago, we were starting the search at Prairie Green for Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, which was ultimately successful,” said Kinew. “Today we’ve started the search for Ashlee Shingoose. More than anything it shows that we’re a province that does what we say and when somebody goes missing, we go looking.”

During this phase, a targeted zone at Brady Landfill will be excavated and searched in partnership with the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Police Service. This step follows months of preparatory work at the site including:

• a pilot test of the search approach,
• securing regulatory approvals,
• developing health and safety plans,
• completing engineering assessments,
• constructing the search facility building, and
• excavating materials above the targeted zone.

Ashlee Shingoose is also known by the honorary name Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe, meaning Buffalo Woman. The Manitoba government has been in regular contact with the Shingoose family throughout the process, the premier noted, adding a ceremony was held at the Brady Landfill today to mark this important step in the search process.

The premier noted care is being taken at every step to ensure a safe and thorough examination.
