WINNIPEG _ Family Services and Culture and Tourism took the biggest hits as the Manitoba government trimmed the overall size of the provincial civil service last year.
According to a new government report, there were 14,701 civil servants as of March 31 of this year, compared with 14,815 on the same date the previous year.
The report by the Manitoba Civil Service Commission also breaks down the total by department.
It shows that the relatively small, grab-bag Department of Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport and Consumer Protection lost 71 employees, taking its ranks to 354.
The next biggest numerical drop was experienced by the Family Services Department, which had 48 fewer staffers.
Among the biggest gainers were the Jobs and Economy Department, with 59 extra staff, and the Justice Department, with 33.
