Manitoba Government Receives Report on Future of Technology, Innovation and Productivity
October 31, 2025
The Manitoba government will study the recommendations in a new report on the future of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and economic innovation, Premier Wab Kinew and Innovation and New Technology Minister Mike Moroz announced today.
“Manitoba is ready to punch above its weight when it comes to the new AI frontier,” said Kinew. “We have exciting new opportunities to harness the power of AI to create good jobs and prosperity at home. This report lays out how Manitoba can become an even more competitive and prosperous province when we invest in and protect our data, our privacy and our infrastructure. We’re ready to ensure Manitobans reap the benefits of AI investments.”
The report was produced by the Innovation and Productivity Taskforce (IPT), a committee of data experts and local business leaders led by entrepreneur Jim Balsillie, which provides strategic advice to the minister on the implementation of emerging technologies. The report, submitted to the minister in October, offers guidance on building an independent, value-added economy to the benefit of all Manitobans.
The IPT outlines a forward-looking strategy to grow Manitoba’s tech sector, strengthen its economy, and ensure workers and families benefit from the global shift toward data, AI and intellectual property. The recommendations align with other government priorities such as the Path to Net Zero and the Economic Development Strategy.
“Manitoba is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the global shift toward data-driven innovation.” said Moroz. “With a strong foundation in research institutions, a growing tech ecosystem and a young, diverse workforce, the province has the ingredients to become a national leader in artificial intelligence and data ownership. This is about building a future where Manitobans don’t just adapt to change – they lead it,”
Manitoba’s economy – already the third fastest-growing in Canada – is anchored by agriculture, manufacturing and energy. But the province, building on that success, is now setting its sights on emerging sectors such as clean technology, critical minerals and digital infrastructure, the minister noted.
“Manitoba’s economic potential can and should be fueled by thriving companies with advanced infrastructure that enhances traditional resource industries, IP and data ownership to capture more value-add, and a workforce that is positioned to succeed in the modern economy all while ensuring alignment with federal policies and strategies,” said Balsillie.
The strategy also emphasizes inclusive growth with a focus on Indigenous partnerships, empowering local companies and upgrading modern infrastructure, the minister noted.
