Manitoba Government Supports Crime Prevention and Community Safety in Thompson

The Manitoba government is providing $50,000 for new resources to enhance downtown safety in Thompson, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced today.

“Manitoba families deserve to feel safe in their community,” said Wiebe. “Our government is making this funding available immediately and will work with local leadership to determine how we can improve public safety for Thompson families and all those in the north who rely on Thompson as an important hub.”

“This announcement moves us forward in our work of building community safety and taking action on the ground in Thompson,” said Mayor Colleen Smook, City of Thompson. “It shows the strong partnership we have built with the Manitoba government and I thank Premier Wab Kinew for the quick response to the issues we are facing. Our community safety and well-being plan highlights several important priorities for Thompson, and I look forward to continue working with this government and leadership throughout the north to make Thompson safer for everyone.”

In 2021, the City of Thompson unveiled the Thompson Community Safety and Well-Being Plan based on input from over 20 different community organizations including government, Indigenous organizations, education, health care, social services and law enforcement. The plan brings together Thompson’s agencies and resources to create a complete approach towards improving safety and a sense of community in the northern Manitoba city.
