Meaningful consultation is key to project success – Journal of Commerce

As consulting with Aboriginal groups becomes more important to see projects through to completion, there is a right way to go about it, says one First Nation.

“Contact us early, contact us directly and work with us through the life of your project. It will save you time,” said Edward Allen, communications director for the Nisga’a, a First Nations group that lives in the Nass River Valley in northwestern B.C.

He said the starting point for any development discussion begins with their treaty.

The Nisga’a Treaty is a negotiated agreement between the Nisga’a Nation, the province and the federal government.
