Meeting With Prairie Infrastructure Ministers will Focus on Safety, Advancement of Transportation Corridors
July 4, 2024
SASKATOON—The ministers for highways and transportation in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba are meeting today in Saskatoon to continue working on strengthening transportation corridors that help expand market access for Prairie products and create jobs in Canada’s supply chains, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced today.
“The seamless flow of goods and services through and within the Prairie provinces is huge part of a trustworthy supply chain for Canadians and I’m looking forward to working with our provincial partners as we bring jobs and safer transportation systems to communities,” said Naylor.
The provinces will identify priority actions and collaborate on key issues including:
- identifying specific travel corridors the three provinces can mutually work to advance;
- improving the safety and efficiency of inter-provincial transportation networks and aligning regulatory frameworks;
- working together to increase leverage when advocating to the federal government on regulatory and funding issues; and
- assessing private sector investment and/or Indigenous partnership opportunities when improving existing or developing new trade corridors.
The future focus will be on improving multi-modal transport infrastructure that promotes safer travel and increases the efficient movement of exports and imports, noted the minister.
The three provinces are working on co-ordinated improvements that benefit the entire region and link producers more efficiently to markets across the globe. The goal is to create a Prairie regional trade corridor that will guide strategic investments in transportation.
