MKO’s Condemns The Comments Made Against Homeless Persons By Manitoba Conservative Party Leadership Candidate Wally Daudrich

by ahnationtalk on February 10, 202524 Views

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Grand Chief Garrison Settee of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is deeply appalled by the offensive and irresponsible comments made by Wally Daudrich, a candidate vying for leadership of the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Party. His disturbing joke about releasing polar bears to address homelessness is utterly unacceptable and reveals a profound insensitivity toward some of society’s most vulnerable individuals.

Such remarks not only trivialize the dire circumstances faced by people experiencing homelessness but also display a blatant disregard for the underlying issues that perpetuate this crisis.

Homelessness is not a choice or a “lifestyle,” as Mr. Daudrich has grossly mischaracterized. It stems from complex, systemic problems, including the lack of affordable housing, mental health challenges, and enduring inequities rooted in colonialism—issues that disproportionately affect Indigenous communities.

For a person seeking to lead a major political party, this joke portrays a concerning mindset that fails to recognize the humanity and dignity of those struggling at the margins of society. It is a stark warning about the kind of leadership being offered—a leadership that may perpetuate harm to already marginalized groups rather than seeking to uplift and support them.

Our leaders must embody empathy, understanding, and a determination to address structural injustices. Instead of mocking those in need, they should be advocates for transformative policies that provide real solutions, advancing social equity and justice.

Manitobans deserve leaders who are committed to building a society where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, is valued and supported. This incident serves as a reminder and a call to action for all involved in the political process to reject such rhetoric and demand better from those who claim to lead. We need leaders who will challenge—not undermine—the fight for dignity and basic human rights for all people, especially the most vulnerable.

As a proprietor of two businesses in northern Manitoba and Treaty Five territory, Lazy Bear Expeditions and Lazy Bear Lodge, who welcomes guests from all over the world, it is important that this type of narrative is not communicated to patrons of these establishments

This shameful and disgraceful display of character cannot go unaddressed. Mr. Daudrich should withdraw from politics until he is prepared to represent all Manitobans with fairness and humanity.
