MNP Partners with River Kings to Raise Funds for New Rotary Splash Park

Fans of the new Rotary Splash Park in Terrace have an extra incentive to cheer on the Terrace River Kings this year thanks to a new fundraising partnership involving the hockey club and the accounting and business consulting firm MNP.

With the River Kings’ regular season underway, MNP has partnered with the team to launch the firm’s ‘Score for the Community’ program in Terrace. For every goal the River Kings score at home during the regular season, MNP is donating $25 to support the new kid’s splash park planned for construction at George Little Park.

“We thought this would be a great way to partner with the River Kings in a way that rewards the team’s success while raising money and awareness for the splash park at the same time,” explained local MNP partner Michael Johnson. “We made the initial announcement to support the splash park at our grand opening reception back in June, when we pledged to donate $5,000 over the next year, so this program is part of fulfilling that commitment.”

MNP is relatively new to Terrace, having come to the community in February 2016 through a merger with local accounting firm McAlpine & Co. However, Johnson notes that McAlpine & Co. had a 50-year history in Terrace serving clients from across Northern B.C. Many of the firm’s team members were born and raised in the area so the firm has a strong desire to give back.

“We think the splash park will be a great asset for our community and we want to support it,” Johnson added. “Plus, we’ll be able to see it right from our office window.”

The splash park is a joint project of the Rotary Club of Terrace Skeena Valley and the Rotary Club of Terrace. Rotary spokesperson Lisa Novich said work on the park continues to move forward. McElhanney Consulting has completed the survey of the property and now Hatch Engineering is calculating the amount of excavation, fill and concrete required to complete the project.

“As soon as those are done we will be able to approach local equipment and material suppliers for donations,” Novich stated. “A local contractor has already volunteered the labour to pour and finish the concrete pad.”

While the work is progressing, Novich noted additional funding is still needed.

“We are starting what we hope will be our final fundraising push,” she said. “We need about $50,000 more in cash. That’s why contributions like this one from MNP are so important to us because it will be the local companies and citizens who propel us over the finish line on this project.”

Fans will be able to track MNP’s total donation for the season in a fundraising thermometer in the River Kings home game programs.
