Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Janice Filmon as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. The appointment was made in keeping with the non-partisan process to select Lieutenant Governors that was announced by the Prime Minister in November 2012.

Ms. Filmon is a social worker, an exemplary volunteer and a motivational speaker who is extensively involved in her community and known for her charitable work.

She is currently the Chair of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, a board member of the Winnipeg Airport Authority and the founding chair of Manitoba A.L.I.V.E. (A Leadership Initiative in Voluntary Efforts), which teaches selected high school students the skills needed in the voluntary sector.

This appointment is the culmination of a process undertaken by the Advisory Committee on Vice-Regal Appointments.

Lieutenant Governors are appointed by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. They serve terms of no less than five years, during which they act as the province’s vice-regal representative.

Prime Minister Harper also took the opportunity to thank the Honourable Philip S. Lee for his dedicated service as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba since August 4, 2009.

Quick Fact

  • Lieutenant Governors are the personal representatives of Her Majesty The Queen of Canada in their respective provinces. Lieutenant Governors fulfill the roles and functions of The Queen, including granting Royal Assent to laws and visiting communities, in their provinces.
