Visitors walking into Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment this winter will notice something new catching their eye in the atrium, a collection of artifacts on loan from Fort la Reine Museum, now on display as part of a special community collaboration. The items, taken from the former Métis Trapper’s Cabin at the museum, offer a rare chance for residents to get an up-close look at pieces of Portage la Prairie’s history while the cabin undergoes a full rebuild.
The idea began with Prairie Fusion’s manager of gallery operations, Lee Beaton, who saw an opportunity to help keep the museum’s story alive during its off-season.
“When I heard about the fundraiser to buy a log to rebuild the fort, I just thought it would be a great opportunity,” Beaton says. “I reached out and asked what they thought of bringing some of the artifacts here to Prairie Fusion and displaying them. We’re both arts and cultural entities, so it just seemed to be a really good fit.”
