(The Pas, MB) – Tribal Councils Investment Group of Manitoba Ltd. (TCIG) administers an education endowment fund. Annually, the group looks for registered charitable organizations whose focus is on educational resources for Indigenous people.

University College of the North (UCN) was recommended by various community leader TCIG members as a possible donee. UCN’s vision statement, programs and support programs align with the goals of TCIG’s charitable organization.

TCIG’s $12,500 donation will be used for 25 student bursaries. All students who are enrolled full‐time in any post‐secondary program at University College of the North are eligible to apply.

“It’s so important for organizations like TCIG to help students,” said Michelle Ballantyne, UCN’s Financial Awards Officer, “Many of our students struggle with finding the money to make it through their education. Every little bit helps.”

“Investing and supporting educational opportunities is what we will build an equitable future on,” said Heather Berthelette, Tribal Councils Investment Group of Manitoba Ltd. CEO. “Education and support programs like those provided by UCN are incredibly important. Education should be available for those who seek it and not hindered by location nor latitude. An investment toward education for northern residents is an investment in the future.”

Tribal Councils Investment Group of Manitoba Ltd. was formed in 1990 by the 7 Tribal Councils of Manitoba. Their vision is and always has been “to contribute to the self‐sufficiency and prosperity of First Nations and future generations”.

University College of the North provides learning opportunities to northern communities while respecting diverse Indigenous and northern values.
