NELSON HOUSE, Man. _ First Nations leaders in northern Manitoba have elected a new grand chief.

Former television reporter Sheila North Wilson has been voted the new Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak grand chief.

Chiefs and councillors of 30 First Nations voted earlier this week in Nelson House.

North Wilson, of Bunibonibee Cree Nation, beat William Elvis Thomas of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, in a second ballot after Tyler Duncan of Norway House Cree Nation withdrew.

Incumbent David Harper, who is chief of the Garden Hill Cree Nation, finished last after a first ballot of voting; he was seeking a third term.

North Wilson was on leave from her job at CTV Winnipeg.

She also worked for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
