UWinnipeg: Upcoming conference responds to National Inquiry into MMIWG

by ahnationtalk on March 1, 2022164 Views

The University of Winnipeg will be hosting a national conference looking at how universities can address the Calls for Justice of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirited (MMIWG2S).

This conference, taking place June 17 and 18, will see scholars, activists, educators, community and family members of MMIWG2S, direct student service providers, and students gather together to think about the ways in which the Calls for Justice can be addressed effectively within a university context.

Dr. Jacqueline Romanow, Associate Professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies, and Dr. Jane Barter, Professor in the Department of Religion and Culture, are coordinating the conference together with Indigenous student researchers Christy Bird and Brenda Daniels.

Indigenous women, in particular, will play a lead role in all levels of the discussion. It will do so through policy recommendations, curriculum design and development on MMIWG2S, and targeted research on student support and empowerment for Indigenous students.

The National Inquiry into MMIWG2S released its 1200-page report in May 2019, which made a systematic case that the crisis constitutes a genocide.

As a result, a variety of persons who attend this conference may gain greater knowledge and strategies to address this crisis in an interdisciplinary and strategic way.

To learn more about this conference, you can email MMIWG2SConference@gmail.com. Registration is $150 for waged members, $50 for unwaged, and students can register for free. This fee covers the costs of most meals and refreshments.
