MKO Encouraging Indigenous Peoples to Take Part in Upcoming Elections
August 29, 2019
Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is encouraging Indigenous peoples across the Province of Manitoba to take part in two upcoming elections: an election for the Province of Manitoba on September 10, 2019, and an election for the Government of Canada on October 21, 2019.
“There are two elections happening this Fall. Two elections happening close to the same time might be confusing for some people, especially those who have never voted before,” said Grand Chief Garrison Settee.
“I want to remind First Nations citizens that we live in a democratic society. I encourage First Nations people to get involved in both elections,” stated Grand Chief Settee. “If you are 18 years old and a resident of Manitoba, you can get involved simply by getting out to a polling station on September 10 and October 21. If you’ve never voted before, consider making plans with a friend or family member to head to the polling station together to cast your ballots. Voting is a free opportunity to make a difference.”
MKO will continue to advocate for 26 Northern First Nations regardless of who is elected on September 10 and October 21.
MKO has created a webpage at www.mkonation.com/rockthevote to provide clear information on how to vote in both upcoming elections along with a poster to raise awareness that will be distributed to Northern First Nations, on our website, and via social media.
