Every chance I get to visit students anywhere in our province, the topic of Truth and Reconciliation comes up, whether it be speaking to middle and high school students on the importance of Indigenous leadership, or reading Indigenous stories to the little ones in elementary schools.
I was recently invited to Victory School in St. Johns to be one of the readers for their Books for Breakfast program, where families can grab some breakfast and cozy up next to a reader, switching to a new reading group every 10 minutes.
I read Raven’s Ribbons, by Tasha Spillett-Sumner, and It’s Powwow Time, by Martha Troian, to the young children and their families. Both books are centred on the joys of Indigenous traditions and the celebration of Indigenous culture, rooted in the pride of our identity.
