Statement from Chief Eric Redhead on Homicide in Shamattawa First Nation

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is issuing this statement on behalf of Chief Eric Redhead of Shamattawa First Nation in Northern Manitoba.
“The loss of a 24-year-old member of our community is hitting us extremely hard,” stated Chief Redhead. “The young man who lost his life was employed with the First Nation and was well-liked and respected in our community. He had a lot of friends and was very active in Shamattawa. Our community is going through a great loss at this time.”
The RCMP Major Crimes Unit from Thompson and Winnipeg are in Shamattawa First Nation investigating the homicide of a 24-year-old man. There is one suspect in custody at this time.
Local crisis teams and other resources are being deployed to assist community members impacted by this crisis.
Chief Redhead is asking for privacy for his community and for the family and friends of the victim. MKO and Chief Redhead will not be providing any interviews on this issue at this time.
